Mondelez International achieves plastic packaging goals

Mondelēz International went above and beyond the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Laws by collecting and diverting 100% of their plastic footprint from nature in 2023. This achievement underscores their dedication to responsible packaging practices, including reducing packaging use and improving recycling infrastructure.

The plastics we breathe

Microplastics have permeated our environment and are slowly making their way into our organs. Tiny pieces of plastic have been found in the ocean, in fish, in the rain, in our blood, and in the air. A study has also found that we inhale or ingest 74,000 to 121,000 microplastic particles per year simply by breathing, eating, and drinking.

While scientists have yet to find the exact effects of these plastic particles on our health, their concerns are rapidly rising. In this interactive article by The Washington Post, you can learn more about how microplastics have been linked with certain health risks and see a visual representation of the microplastics around us.

Southeast Asia tops global intake of microplastics

Southeast Asian countries such as Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines ingest the most microplastics among 109 countries, according to a study by Cornell University researchers. Indonesians, the top consumers of microplastics, were found to ingest about 15g of microplastics per month – equivalent to three credit cards – with the majority of plastic particles coming from aquatic sources such as fish and seafood.

Microplastics, defined as plastic particles smaller than 5mm, are fibres, fragments or granules created when plastic products break down, or can be shed by synthetic textiles.

PepsiCo and PCX in ASEAN Circular Plastics Summit

We had an inspiring panel discussion with Nitin Bhandari of PepsiCo at the ASEAN Circular Plastics Summit held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The discussion, which also featured PCX Commercial Director Rudi Ramin, highlighted the remarkable work done by PepsiCo Philippines with HOPE: Business for Good. It showcased the brand’s commitment to building a sustainable future in the Philippines by sponsoring 76 collection sites managed by female micro-entrepreneurs through the Aling Tindera program.

“Sharing best practices and failures is crucial in addressing the pressing issue of plastic pollution. Together, we can work towards solving this challenge,” Rudi noted.

Over 70 companies joined PCX Pulse

We would like to thank our sustainability partners for joining our PCX Philippines team at PCX Pulse on June 25. Over 90 people from 70+ companies joined us to discuss EPR Compliance updates, our outlook for 2024, and exciting initiatives to drive impact, such as the Plastic Cleanup Partnership program and Upcycling projects.

Rotary Club holds a forum to raise awareness about the role of EPR Law in addressing plastic pollution

We were privileged to participate in the Sustainability forum organized by the Rotary Club of Makati Premier District and P&A Grant Thornton. Entitled "Unwrapping Change: Transforming the Philippines from its Plastic Legacy through EPR," the event aimed to increase awareness about the pressing issue of plastic pollution and the transformative role the Philippine Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) Law can play in addressing it.

Rina Noeh, Secretary General of the ESG Association of Malaysia, highlighted, "By embracing EPR, we can drive a paradigm shift towards a circular economy where waste is minimized, and resources are continually recovered and reused." She further emphasized that tackling the plastic waste crisis requires a comprehensive three-phase approach: legislation, holistic implementation, and impact evaluation.

The event was attended by over 200 guests from the government, civic organizations, and business sectors.
