Plastic Credits Can Play a Role in Mitigating Climate Change

By quantifying the carbon emissions embedded in the plastic in their products and packaging, companies can align their plastic responsibility strategies with carbon reduction goals.
Plastics have different carbon impacts, with CO2-equivalent emissions per ton ranging from 3.9 for LDPE to 6.0 for PET, even before considering disposal. By using plastic credits to divert waste, companies can prevent 1 to 2 tons of CO2-e emissions per ton recovered, depending on the type, location, and disposal outcome.

Project Partner Spotlight

In Madhya Pradesh, India, this PCX project partner pays a premium for plastic waste from informal sector 'rag pickers' who collect near the Narmada River, preventing pollution and preserving this vital water source.
Waste pickers bring the plastic to collection agents, who send it to the project partner's recycling facility to be processed into granules and pellets sold to companies as an alternative to virgin plastic.
The project also upcycles some collected plastic into irrigation pipes, which they provide to farmers at subsidized rates as part of a buy-back scheme. This has increased the farmers' living conditions and lifted the growth of their crops with substantial irrigation measures.
