What are microplastics doing to our bodies?

Scientists from the University of New Mexico are finding that microplastics are not just around us — they are building up inside us. Their research shows that concentrations of microplastics in human brains have increased by nearly 50% since 2016, with many of these particles traced back to decades-old plastic waste that has broken down over time.

While the full health impacts are still being studied, early findings point to concerning links with dementia, fertility issues, and heart disease. The study estimates some human brains contain the equivalent of five bottle caps’ worth of plastic.

Microplastics pose a threat to global food security

A new study finds that microplastics could reduce global yields of staple crops like wheat, rice, and maize by up to 14%. Reviewing over 3,000 observations across 157 studies, researchers also found that microplastics lower photosynthesis by 12% in terrestrial plants and 7% in marine algae — both crucial for food security and healthy ocean ecosystems.

Sustainability Week Asia: Why Circularity Can't Wait

“For many developing countries, plastic pollution is a national security issue affecting human health, livelihoods, and food security,” said Nanette Medved-Po, Founder of PCX Markets and PCX Solutions, at Economist Impact’s recent event in Bangkok, Accelerating Plastics Circularity: Priorities and Progress Across Asia-Pacific.

Nanette emphasized the pressing challenge posed by inadequate recycling and limited circularity: “Currently, only about 9% of all plastic ever produced has been recycled.” Drawing from the Philippines' experience with Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR), she underscored the critical need for global collaboration: “Businesses dislike nothing more than regulatory uncertainty. Solutions exist, but stakeholders must unite with determination to implement them regionally and globally.”
