Goodwill

The Challenge: 22 separate agency filings made EPR reporting a network-wide data challenge

‍

Goodwill is a network of agencies across North America with retail and e-commerce sales. Through ShopGoodwill.com, its national marketplace, agencies sell donated goods. To meet California EPR requirements, 22 individual agencies had separate EPR reports to prepare.  Eleven of them were in California reporting retail and ecommerce data within California, and the other 11 were outside California, reporting ecommerce data for sales into California.

The information was spread across different organizations with different data sets and different levels of EPR experience. George B. describes the data as “messy at best”:

The Search for a Partner: Goodwill chose PCX for EPR expertise and hands-on support

A manager at a ShopGoodwill.com agency in Phoenix Arizona recommended PCX after a positive experience. Goodwill also looked at other providers. In the end, George B. says PCX stood out for its knowledge and engagement.

‍

Implementation: PCX paired expert guidance with easy-to-use software

PCX worked with George B. to gather and interpret data from across Goodwill’s network for 22 separate agency EPR reports. Under George’s leadership, the Goodwill team helped coordinate the many stakeholders involved. PCX’s packaging EPR software and team support helped agencies understand what data to collect and how to use it.

‍

The Difference: One shared “source of truth” brought multiple spreadsheets into a single data framework shared across multiple teams

PCX consolidated Goodwill’s scattered spreadsheets into one shared data framework, giving teams across agencies a clear place to find and use the information for their EPR reports.
‍

The Impact: On-time reports, hundreds of hours saved, and a much better understanding of EPR laws

PCX helped Goodwill submit 22 packaging EPR compliance reports on time. George B. estimates that PCX saved his organization hundreds of hours. He also says Goodwill’s understanding of EPR compliance has improved significantly.

‍

Looking Ahead: Figuring out packaging changes to meet California’s source reduction laws

PCX helped Goodwill assess packaging changes that could support California’s source reduction goals. SB 54 sets targets for reducing plastic covered material, measured by weight and number of components against a 2023 baseline: 10% by 2027, 20% by 2030, and 25% by 2032.

PCX’s packaging EPR software lets Goodwill model packaging changes, compare their potential effect on fees, and assess options for reducing potential malus fees.

Takeaways for Multi-Agency Businesses Preparing for Multi-State EPR

Goodwill’s packaging EPR reporting experience offers lessons for any multi-agency or multi-branch business tackling EPR in the US.

PCX’s packaging EPR expertise helps teams move from general knowledge to reporting decisions. PCX helps interpret state requirements, organize complex packaging data, and guide teams through what to report, when to report, and how to report.

One coordinated data process beats asking multiple agencies or branches to solve the same problem. PCX can bring information together across teams and agencies so each reporting group can work from a shared, understandable data source. Goodwill submitted 22 reports on time and George B. estimated that PCX saved Goodwill hundreds of hours across the national network.

One dashboard beats a stack of static spreadsheets. The PCX dashboard shows packaging and projected fee obligations by SKU, brand, business unit, state, and other views, bringing year-over-year reports and fee projections together.

Model the cost of packaging changes. Teams can identify packaging components to consider for reduction goals and use sophisticated source-reduction modeling to compare the potential cost and EPR-fee impact of different packaging choices.
